Vegetable Garden
The vegetable garden was established in 2010 in response to a renewed interest from the public in growing organic fresh vegetables in home gardens. As the vegetables and herbs ripen, they are harvested and donated to the local food shelf.
This vegetable garden is often used to demonstrate creative ways to plant the vegetables we enjoy. The garden currently showcases the use of raised beds, trellises and pots as various ways to grow our food whether the available space is a deck or an acre of land. Many vegetables are well-suited to growing in containers including: cucumber, eggplant, chard, garlic, lettuce, onions, peppers, snap beans, peas, most herbs and of course tomatoes.
This year there are numerous examples of how vegetables can be grown in containers. So if space is a constraint, all that is needed is a large pot and and a sunny place to grow your own tomatoes, peppers, cucumbers – the possibilities are endless! This year many varieties of tomatoes, cucumbers and beans are featured. Pumpkins and squash are all planted in containers so show how versatile this option can be.
