Container Gardens
The container gardens near the garden shed includes several window boxes, a trellis behind the shed, planters by the central arbor and a pair of planters by the picnic garden. Each summer the container gardens feature a mixture of ornamental grasses, new annual flower varieties and plants with colorful leaves such as coleus to show the beauty these mixtures of plants can bring.
In 2023, the window box planters feature a unique and beautiful new petunia and sweet potato vine. The round planters near the arbor feature the an interesting sedge grass and English ivy vines and for filler — a mix of salvia, coleus, dianthus. The containers by the Picnic Garden display the talents of two of our newest WCMG volunteers, each with a unique look and style.
A Hyacinth bean vine (Lablab purpurea) climbs the trellis on the back of the garden shed. This vine is an annual and provides interesting stem and leaf color along with beautiful purple/white flowers that attract butterflies and hummingbirds. The vine will eventually have purple seed pods which can be eaten and prepared similar to peas or green beans. This plant is an annual and can grow between 12 and 15 feet each summer.
For planters that pop, use the design concept of thriller, filler, spiller: start with a tall, colorful plant in the back or center for the “thriller”, then choose vines or other trailing plants to spill over the edge, and finish with blooms that fill in the remaining space.
