Gardens in Washington County
Maintaining community gardens that also serve as outdoor classrooms for the public is one of the core activities that Master Gardener volunteers look forward to each summer. Sharing resource-based information about best gardening practices is part of the mission to create healthy landscapes, healthy people and a healthy planet.
“The Fairest Garden” at the Washington County Fairgrounds is a collection of mini gardens that each display different themes including culinary herbs and cottage garden favorites. Each day of the county fair, volunteers talk with the public about the best gardening practices.
“The Giving Garden” teaches young gardeners where their yummy veggies come from as the youth plant and pick produce throughout the summer, with the harvest going to the local food shelf. More than 27,500 pounds of herbs, fruits and vegetables have been donated since the garden was established in 2009.
Throughout Washington County the Master Gardener volunteers maintain gardens that serve as educational opportunities within those communities. Most of these gardens have informational signs to educate others about creating the best habitat for pollinators. Occasionally volunteer events are held at these gardens to promote best principles for gardening and creating pollinator habitats.
